Did You Know - Facts About Pool Chlorine

Pool Chlorine is the most common sanitation chemical for pools across the world. And for good reason! In this video, we will discuss how to properly sanitize your pool with chlorine and why sanitation is important.

What is Pool Chlorine?

DID YOU KNOW?
Pool chlorine is a multi-purpose water sanitizer.

  • Helps kill bacteria and germs
  • Oxidizes water to control organic debris like perspiration and body oils
  • Deters algae growth

Routine chlorination will promote healthy water, making it safe for swimmers. We recommend using a chlorine feeder over by the equipment pad, or an inexpensive chlorine floater that slowly circulates chlorine tablets around the pool.

Why Do We Use Chlorine in Pools?

DID YOU KNOW?
Chlorine-based sanitizers reduce a swimmer's risk of waterborne illnesses, such as diarrhea, E. Coli, Hepatitis A, cryptosporidium, as well as various types of skin infections. This is why it is critical to properly sanitize a swimming pool.

Salt water pools are actually chlorinated pools in which chlorine is generated at the salt cell. Salt water pool owners still need to monitor their chlorine levels on a routine basis.

DID YOU KNOW?
The proper chlorine level in a pool is between 1 and 3 parts per million (PPM)

Shocking, or super-chlorinating, your pool on a regular basis ensures that the free chlorine stays active and sanitizing against algae and other contaminants.

Test the Water Chemistry

During the swimming season, it’s best to test your pool water at least once per week. As a reminder, we offer a Free 10-Point AccuBlue® Water Test at every local Leslie's Retail Store. Find your nearest Leslie's HERE.
