Using Leslies Maintenance Chemicals

Leslie’s sells many products that aid your pool in ways that can’t always be shown on a water test. Chemicals such as Leslie’s Algae Control, Ultra Bright, and PHOSfree provide many benefits to your pool that will help keep it healthy all year.

Leslie’s Algae Control works to prevent and kill all types of algae in your pool. It is also an important chemical to add when winterizing your pool or starting it up for the spring. For a general maintenance dose during the swimming season, add 2-4 ounces of this product per 10,000 gallons of water every week. This can be added directly to the pool. This small amount, along with brushing, will help keep algae from developing.

If you use this product to kill algae, you will need to increase the amount of Algae Control inserted into the pool. This information can be found on the product or by talking to a professional at your local Leslie’s location.

Another product that will keep your pool clear is Leslie’s Ultra Bright. Certain particles in your water may be too small for your filter to remove. Ultra Bright traps these particles, (ranging from dirt, oils, and other contaminants) together to create something big enough that your filter can remove. This is ideal for sand and cartridge filters, but is not recommended for D.E. filters, as it can clog up the D.E. grids.

A small dose of 4 ounces per 10,000 gallons is required for Ultra Bright. Mix the required amount of product in a bucket of pool water first and then add that mixture to the pool. Avoid adding Ultra Bright directly to your pool water.  After adding it, it is recommended to run your system for 4 hours. Be careful not to add more product than is recommended. This can sometimes make the problem worse.

PHOSfree is an item from Leslie’s that helps remove phosphates from your pool water. Phosphates are the main source of food for algae, and can enter your pool in a number of ways like rain, plant debris, swimmer waste, and many pool chemicals. It is a common compound that is created when phosphorous dissolves in water.

You will never be able to permanently reduce the amount phosphates in your water. However, that does not mean that using PHOSfree is not beneficial. Just like constantly balancing your pH or maintaining your chlorine level, maintaining a low phosphate level is a process that will benefit your pool in the long run.

When you initially begin to use PHOSfree, it is recommended to add 1 liter directly to the pool skimmer with the filter on for either 8 hours a day or 2 continuous days. After this start-up dosage, PHOSfree requires only 4 ounces per 10,000 gallons to keep your phosphate level low.
